Comparison

Pocket has shut down

Tuck vs Pocket: an honest comparison

Pocket was the king of read-later for fifteen years, until Mozilla shut it down in July 2025. We built Tuck on what Pocket got right and what Mozilla failed to maintain.

Where Tuck wins

  • Tuck still exists, and is funded by subscriptions, not corporate strategy decks
  • Active development with public roadmap (Pocket shipped one minor release in its last two years)
  • AI summaries built in (Pocket never integrated any LLM features)
  • Modern highlight engine: 4 colors, notes, Markdown export (Pocket never had highlights)
  • One-click migration of your Pocket export (if you saved it before November 12, 2025)

Where Pocket wins

  • Discover feed: Pocket's curated daily reading recommendations were genuinely loved
  • Brand recognition: "save it to Pocket" was the verb for a decade
  • Generous free tier (unlimited articles, full sync) that Mozilla maintained until the end

Honest section

When Pocket is the better choice.

We’d rather you pick the right tool than the Tuck tool. Here are situations where Pocket genuinely fits better.

  • You wanted a curated daily reading list

Pocket's Discover was genuinely great: human editors surfacing 5–10 worth-reading pieces a day. Tuck doesn't try to recreate this. If that's what you miss, look at Matter (algorithmic) or The Browser newsletter (human-curated).

  • You want a backed-by-a-mega-corp safety net

Pocket sat under Mozilla's umbrella, which felt safe, until it didn't. Tuck is an indie team funded by subscriptions, not corporate goodwill. We trade the perceived stability of a Mozilla for the actual stability of having to ship value to keep the lights on.

From people who switched

Why they moved off Pocket.

  • Pocket disappeared with all my saves. Tuck didn't pretend to magic them back. It offered a discount and a fresh start. A year in, my smaller library feels healthier than the 4,000-article graveyard ever did.

    Sara M.

    Engineering Manager

  • I came to Tuck six months after Pocket shut. The fresh-start framing was the right call. I wasn't going to read those 4,000 articles anyway.
